About Us

The purpose of The Schuyler Housing Opportunity Council, Inc. (SHOC) is to insure that every resident of Schuyler County has access to safe and decent housing.

SHOC was established in 1989 and incorporated as a non-profit agency in 1993. Since its beginning we have been able to help between 25 to 50 families each year to improve their homes to a reasonably livable condition. In the past we have managed multiple unit rehab jobs. Currently, our emphasis is on responding to individual housing needs.

We try to cover gaps which other programs may not be able to respond. We network with Schuyler Outreach, the Office of Social Services, the Economic Opportunity Program, Catholic Charities, NYSEG Power Partners, and the Office for the Aging.

The United Way of Schuyler County is at present a major funder. We also receive substantial income from our Annual Benefit Dinner held each spring at the Logan Ridge Estates in Hector. The remainder of our funds come from donations made by local corporations, businesses and individuals. All of our income is used for the purchase of materials or expertise that we do not have. Volunteers provide most of the rehab labor and all of the program support manpower.

We have helped over 300 families in the past ten years.
